When Storms Hit Your Marriage

Over the past few months my husband and I have faced many life storms. Back in October we started having car troubles, then my husband lost his job, and on top of all of that he got injured playing basketball. You’ve probably heard the saying, “When it rains it pours” well that’s definitely what we felt was happening to us. It seemed as though we couldn’t catch a break, and we kept getting more bad news week after week. Eventually, frustrations started building up, and we began to take things out on each other.

One day while riding in the car together, my husband and I had a deep conversation about what we felt was really happening. We believe that the enemy was trying to use our circumstances to turn us against one another and affect our marriage. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Eph 6:12). All the problems we were facing were out of our control, but we were allowing them to steal our joy and put a wedge between us. That day in the car we pointed out the enemies schemes, and decided that we were not going to fall for them. We prayed together and asked God to help us have hearts of thankfulness despite all the trials. We both agreed that we would have to rely on God and each other to get through what we were going through.

No matter how great your marriage is, storms will always come. It might be the loss of job, the loss of a child, health issues, car troubles, having to take care of an sick parent, etc. If you want your marriage to survive those storms, you MUST have God and His word as the foundation for your marriage.

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”(Matt 7:24-27).

Do you want to have a marriage that’s built upon the rock (God), or one that’s built on sand (the world)? Only a couple that puts God at the center of their marriage and lives according to biblical principles, will stand the storms.

I’m so thankful that my husband and I have a strong foundation. That we know where to turn to when we’re faced with various trials. I believe that no matter what comes our way, our marriage will never be destroyed because God is our rock, our fortress, and our strong tower. The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him (Nahum 1:7).
